Acupressure Techniques for GERD Relief

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, causes stomach acids to flow back into the esophagus. This chronic and painful condition makes it difficult for some people to enjoy a reasonable quality of life. Some patients find relief with over-the-counter medications for heartburn, but others may need an alternative treatment. Acupuncture and acupressure are alternative treatments that may resolve the pain and discomfort of GERD.
  1. Alternative practitioner

    • You can choose to use a trained alternative practitioner to treat your GERD with acupressure. The treatment can be done manually or with the use of electrical acupoint stimulation. If you are not comfortable learning the techniques to treat GERD, look for a practitioner who is familiar with the procedure.

Look for an acupressure professional in the same way that you would look for a doctor. Many acupressure professionals focus their practices on stopping smoking or losing weight. This may not be the best choice for your condition. The professional that you choose should be familiar with the techniques used to treat digestive disorders including GERD.

    Pressure points

    • The pressure points used to treat GERD with acupuncture and acupressure are located on each wrist. The point is called pericardium 6, and it has been used in Chinese medicine to treat gastrointestinal upset such as nausea and acid reflux. To find the location, measure two widths of your thumb from the crease in your wrist. The point is located between the tendons in this part of your forearm. An acupressure point is never located on a bone, but always in between areas of bone and tendon.

Put pressure on the area that is not uncomfortable but firm. A chronic condition such as GERD may require frequent treatments. Use the acupressure technique two times a day for three to five minutes to relieve chronic acid reflux. Always perform your acupressure technique when you can focus your full attention on the task. In Chinese medicine, the intent of the treatment is just as important as the technique. You must be focused on your intent when you are applying pressure to the area to treat GERD.

    Complementary medicine

    • Acupressure has not been proven to cure GERD and should be used as a complementary treatment for your symptoms. Discuss your use of alternative medicine with your doctor. Always ask your doctor if acupressure or acupuncture is a safe treatment for you to consider.
