What is adult croup?
In adults, croup is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the parainfluenza virus, influenza virus, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Other causes can include bacterial infections, allergies, or trauma to the airway.
Symptoms of adult croup may include:
- A hoarse voice
- A barking cough
- Difficulty breathing, especially when inhaling
- Wheezing
- Stridor (a high-pitched sound when breathing in)
- Chest pain
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Treatment for adult croup typically involves supportive measures, such as rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms. In more severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary to provide oxygen and closer monitoring.
If you are experiencing symptoms of adult croup, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
