Acupressure Points for Sinus Pressure
There are cavities in the area of the face, around the eyes and nose called sinuses. The sinuses can be problematic for some, causing a condition known as sinusitis. Those who suffer with sinusitis can experience, pain, pressure, congestion and other symptoms. One holistic remedy for sinus pain is acupressure.-
Types of sinusitis
-
Sinusitis is a condition that inflames the sinus cavities around the nose and eyes. Inflammation can be caused by allergies, a cold or a virus. There are two types of sinusitis.
The first is acute sinusitis, brought on by a virus or bacteria which manifests in the sinus cavities.
The second is known as chronic sinusitis, the sinus inflammation of a longer duration. This can be caused by prolonged infection, allergies, or pollution and dust. Pain, swelling, fever, general malaise and yellow or green mucous are all possible side-effects.
In both acute and chronic sinusitis, a headache caused from the pressure is usually present.
Why acupressure?
-
Those who suffer from sinus pressure may resort to medications, thinking it's the only way to stop the pain from the pressure and unclog the sinuses. Acupressure is a natural way that is effective and brings relief, without the use of medications.
How acupressure works
-
Not only does acupressure help to keep pain at bay from sinus pressure, but it also overall helps to expel viruses from the body by stimulating the body's natural resistance fighters.
Acupressure points to reduce sinus pressure
-
Dr. Mark Brinson, who specializes in Oriental medicine, suggests the following acupressure points to relieve sinus pressure.
The first is known as LI4, which is the web of the hand between the thumb and forefinger. The second is LI11, which is the crease of the arm. Brinson suggests applying pressure in a circular motion in these areas for 30 seconds to 1 minute each.
Brinson also mentions using an upward circular motion underneath the nose, midway on either side of the nose and between the center of the eyebrows.
Using essential oils during acupressure, such as eucalyptus, can also enhance the treatment.
Brinson's demonstration of these acupressure points can be viewed on video, (see link in Resources).
