What Does It Take to Be a Good Acupuncturist?

Acupuncture has existed for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a method of healing and treating various illnesses and pains. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists acupuncture as a form of treatment for more than 40 medical conditions. WHO also recommends education and training requirements, and in the United States, each state has its own legal requirements for becoming a licensed acupuncturist. However, similar to a doctor, a good acupuncturist requires more than a certification and license.

Education

• Experience and training are keys to becoming a professional acupuncturist. Furthermore, continuing education is also important to improve and refine skills.

Sterile Environment

• An acupuncturist's office should be clean and sterile. All needles should be disposable needles or, at the very least, sterilized to prevent contamination and spread of infection.

Relate to Patients

• As a healer, an acupuncturist should be able to connect with his patients and answer questions in an effective manner that will ease any concerns. Satisfied patients will give their recommendations when an acupuncturist goes a step beyond simply treating ailments.

Code of Ethics

• As medical practitioners follow a code of ethics, acupuncturists should also apply a similar code.

Heal

• A good acupuncturist heals and should be able to efficiently determine the specific pressure points to effectively treat the patient.
