What is an iliectomy?
An ileectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a portion of the ileum, which is the last part of the small intestine. It is typically performed to treat conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or intestinal obstruction. During an ileectomy, the surgeon removes the affected portion of the ileum and then reconnects the remaining parts of the small intestine. This may be done using a variety of techniques, such as a side-to-side anastomosis or an end-to-end anastomosis. In some cases, an ileostomy may also be performed, which involves creating an opening in the abdomen through which waste can be released from the small intestine.
