Home Remedy for Dandruff

Redness, itching and flaking are three symptoms of dandruff, a common scalp condition which can stem from health problems, poor diet, emotional stress, tension, exhaustion, exposure to extreme weather conditions and from harsh shampoos. Whatever the cause, before rushing out to the drug store to buy a dandruff shampoo, you may want to try a home remedy.
  1. Topical Remedies

    • Applying a topical remedy to your scalp allows the treatment to work right at the source. Some ingredients will treat dandruff, others prevent the condition and others help to promote healing and soothe red, itchy scalp. Some traditional remedies include:

Fenugreek seeds: Soak 2 tbsp. of seeds overnight. In the morning, grind into a fine paste and apply to the entire scalp. Allow this to remain on your scalp for 30 minutes and then thoroughly wash your hair either with acacia concinna or a soap-nut solution.

Aloe vera gel: Fifteen minutes prior to washing your hair, thoroughly massage aloe vera gel onto your scalp. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes before shampooing with a gentle shampoo.

Aspirin: Grind two tablets into a fine powder. Add to your shampoo and allow it to stay on your scalp for two minutes. Rinse and wash thoroughly to remove all the particles.

Coconut oil: Massage your scalp with warmed coconut oil. Then add the juice of two lemons and allow the mixture to remain on your scalp for two hours. Shampoo thoroughly with a gentle shampoo. Repeat two or three times per week for maximum dandruff protection.

Olive oil: Apply, thoroughly massaging the oil into the scalp. Allow it to remain for eight or nine hours. Rinse and thoroughly shampoo with a gentle shampoo.

Thyme: Take four to five dried leaves and boil in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool and then massage into your scalp. Leave the mixture on your scalp for 30 minutes.

Lime: After washing your hair thoroughly, add 1 tsp. of lime juice (fresh) to your final rinse. This helps to prevent dandruff and enhance the natural shine in your hair.

Green gram powder: Mix 2 tablespoons with 1/2 cup or cure and use twice weekly to wash your hair.

Beets: Boil both the greens and beet roots in water for 10 minutes. Allow to cool and use the mixture nightly to massage the scalp. (White beets work best).

Snake gourd: Rub the juice thoroughly into the scalp. This can remain on the scalp overnight.

    Other Suggestions

    • Detoxify your body by trying a five-day all-fruit diet. Eat juicy, fresh fruit for all three meals, avoiding canned fruit, bananas and citrus. After your five-day fruit diet, gradually integrate more foods with a focus on raw foods (particularly vegetables and fruits). Avoid pickles, processed foods, strong coffee or tea, condiments, sugar, white flour and meats until you notice an improvement in your condition.

Keeping your scalp and hair clean will help to inhibit the build-up of dead cells. Shampoo regularly to avoid the build up of oils, dirt or hair products. Brush your hair every day in order to enhance circulation and help to remove flakes. After brushing, thoroughly massage your scalp with your finger tips.
