Head Lice Treatments Using Olive Oil

Head lice are very small insects that live on human scalps and hair. There are many ways you can treat head lice, though some are more effective than others. The use of olive oil is one such treatment.
  1. Identification

    • An infestation of head lice causes your scalp to itch and excessive scratching is usually the first sign. Head lice also lay eggs that are white in color, which will stand out against dark hair.

    Treatment

    • Olive oil treatments work well, but the oil must remain on the hair and scalp for at least 2 hours. Head lice can survive if they are only in the olive oil for 1 hour, but will suffocate after approximately 2 hours. The treatment may need to be repeated after a week has passed, to suffocate the lice that may have hatched.

    Prevention

    • Avoid contact with other people's head accessories, such as hats and hair brushes, to prevent an infestation.

    Warning

    • Olive oil treatments for head lice may cause the scalp to become irritated. Do not use such treatments if you have sensitive skin.

    Fun Fact

    • Sesame seeds are similar in size to head lice.
