What Is a Peritonsillar Abscess?
A peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a localized collection of pus that lies within the tissues surrounding the tonsils. It is one of the most common causes of a sore throat and difficulty swallowing. The cause of a PTA is usually a bacterial infection, most often caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus). Other bacteria that may cause PTA include Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Symptoms of a PTA can include:
- Severe sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pain that radiates to the ear
- Fever and chills
- Hoarseness
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Bad breath
- Difficulty opening the mouth
Treatment for a PTA typically involves antibiotics and drainage of the abscess, followed by pain management. In some cases, the tonsils may need to be surgically removed to prevent future infections.
