What is propriception?

Proprioception is the body's ability to sense its own position and movement in space. It is a critical sense for everyday activities such as walking, reaching, and catching.

There are two main types of proprioception: conscious and unconscious. Conscious proprioception is the ability to consciously control the movement of our body parts. For example, if we want to reach for a cup of coffee, we can consciously move our arm and hand to do so. Unconscious proprioception is the ability to sense the position of our body parts without consciously thinking about it. For example, we can feel the position of our arm and hand even if we are not looking at it.

There are a number of different sensory receptors that contribute to proprioception. These include:
