Essential Oils for Moods

Essential oils are derived from plants through a distilling process. Aromatherapy utilizes concentrated aromatic substances such as essential oils to improve health and alter mood. Aromatherapy is quickly becoming a popular form of alternative medicine to soothe common ailments. Consult a physician before beginning any alternative medicine regimen. Some essential oils can interact with prescription medication or present adverse effects.
  1. Lavender

    • In addition to having a pleasing fragrance, lavender is known for its soothing properties. For this reason, it has been used to remedy a range of ailments including anxiety, depression and insomnia. Aromatherapists recommend inhaling the aroma of lavender to improve sleep quality and promote relaxation. Lavender may be consumed in tea form, applied topically as a fragrance in lotions or massage oils, or inhaled as a vapor when added to boiling water. Adults may apply it topically.

    Chamomile

    • Chamomile has traditionally been used in tea form to treat nausea and heartburn while promoting a sense of calm and relieving frayed nerves. While there are two types of chamomile, German and English, both work to relieve the same ailments but have different appearances and growing conditions. Chamomile may be applied topically if diluted with a carrier oil such as sunflower oil, consumed in tea form, or added to a hot running bath. Five to 10 drops are recommended for the latter application.

    Lemon Balm

    • Lemon balm is a member of the mint family, and its calming effects have been reputed since the Middle Ages when it was blended into wine to create a soothing elixir. It may be used in conjunction with chamomile to promote well-being and reduce anxiety. Lemon balm is also said to treat minor sleep disorders and improve appetite, which can help alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It can be inhaled or applied topically.

    Jasmine

    • Jasmine, which is known by the scientific name Jasminum grandiflorum, can be used to relieve the symptoms of anxiety while encouraging a sense of calm and well-being. Its essential oil can be utilized topically or added to boiling water and inhaled as a steam. The easiest way to enjoy the health benefits of jasmine is to inhale the fragrance from the bottle. Jasmine can be utilized to relieve symptoms of mild to moderate depression and feelings of grief or sadness.
