How to Relieve Sinusitis With Essential Oils

Sinuses are hollow cavities located within the cheekbones, around the eyes and nose; and in the forehead. They are connected to nasal cavities by small channels lined with mucus membranes. But when mucus membranes become inflamed and swollen, due to a cold or allergies, nasal passages are blocked, preventing proper sinus drainage and restricting breathing. Blockage can lead to an infection known as sinusitis. Pure and natural essential oils contain properties that aid in draining sinus passages, improving breathing and reducing mucus secretions.

Sprinkle a few drops of fennel essential oil on a clean handkerchief and breath in the vapors to relieve congestion and sinusitis pain. Fennel oil is antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, anti-toxic and is an effective expectorant. Quiet a nagging cough, by adding 1 or 2 drops of therapeutic grade, pure and natural fennel oil to 1 tbsp. of organic honey. Take the healing mixture orally to ease throat pain and hoarseness. Therapeutic grade fennel is considered safe for human consumption by the FDA.

Sweet basil essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves.

Add 20 to 30 drops of your favorite essential oil to a vaporizer or household humidifier. Lemon eucalyptus, blue cypress and basil essential oils contain powerful antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and decongestant properties that refresh interior air, settle dust and neutralize pollutants.

Apply calming, centering and balancing essential oils to relieve congestion and promote a restful, restorative night's sleep. Blocked sinus passages disturb breathing and encourage insomnia.
