Aromatherapy Code of Conduct

Reputable aromatherapists follow a code of conduct or code of ethics written by a professional organization. These guidelines help to create a safe, high-quality environment that is professional, helpful and ethical.

  1. Services

    • The client's welfare, comfort and health should always be a priority, according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). NAHA cautions aromatherapists against prescribing, diagnosing or providing a service that requires a license. The UK Aromatherapy Council says aromatherapists should not treat any case that goes beyond his or her training and abilities.

    Education

    • NAHA's Code of Ethics specifically states that aromatherapists should educate their clients on the availability and quality of "true aromatherapy products and services." They should also never make false claims about the benefits of aromatherapy. Aromatherapists should further their own education through professional development whenever possible, according to the International Aromatherapy and Aromatic Medicine Association.

    Behavior

    • Aromatherapists should not conduct in sexual activities or behavior with clients, or use any mind-altering substances prior to an aromatherapy session, according to NAHA. The UK Aromatherapy Council advises members to respect a client's individual beliefs, religion, lifestyle and sexuality.
