Herbal Oil Guide
Herbal oils are the essences of the herbs transferred to oil. This can be done through expression, steam distillation or solvent extraction through a cold press process. Depending on the herbs used, the resulting herbal oils can be used for aromatherapy, massage or medicinal purposes--both topical and through ingestion. Some of these herbal oils are also used in cooking to add flavor to food. These natural oils can also be used to develop a mood or ambiance to a room and enhance the senses.-
Bergamot
-
The citrus scent of herbal oil made from bergamot is relaxing yet invigorating. Added to a vaporizer, it can dispel unpleasant odors. It can also be used to treat oily skin. However, make sure you do not apply it to your skin before going out on a sunny day as it increases your skin's susceptibility to sunburn.
Chamomile (Roman)
-
Roman chamomile herbal oil has a strong soothing effect on the mind and body. It is also good for moisturizing and protecting dry skin. This oil is also used to treat inflamed skin. Additionally, it has many medicinal uses. It can be used to treat headache, insomnia and menstrual discomforts.
Fennel
-
Herbal oil made from fennel has a sweet licorice-like aroma. It is believed to soothe digestive issues such as bloating when massaged over the stomach area. It is also good for breast-firming massage and promoting milk production if you use it sparingly. You should use it after you give birth and not during pregnancy. Do not use this oil on children as it can be an irritant to sensitive skin.
Jasmine
-
Jasmine oil's scent is soothing and uplifting. It is a good scent to smell to help relieve stress or anxiety. Plus, its scent is also reportedly an aphrodisiac. You can also use it to treat hot, dry skin. Be aware that this oil is very expensive as a huge amount of blossoms that can only be picked at night is needed to make only a few drops of oil.
Lavender
-
Lavender oil is one of the most versatile of herbal oils. It can be added to a vaporizer and sprayed on pillows to help you relax and sleep. Added to a bath, it can soothe and calm your body. It is excellent relief to tired muscles. Furthermore, it can be used to treat burns and reduce scarring. It blends easily with other oils, as well.
