  1. What it is

    • Aromatherapy is a method of holistic healing, designed to rejuvenate through the use of fragrance. Essential oils, made from plant materials, heal and restore the body, mind and soul. Aromatherapy use dates back to the Egyptians.

    How it works

    • When we breathe in an aroma, it passes through the nose and into the brain's limbic system. This system regulates emotion, mood, learning and memory. When the brain reacts positively to the scent, it causes an emotional lift and triggers pleasant memories. This helps with relaxation and improved energy.

When oils are rubbed on the body, they are absorbed into the skin through the sweat glands and hair follicles. Oils are drawn into body fluids where they fight bacteria and viruses. They can also help boost the immune system.

    Products

    • The 10 most common essential oils are peppermint, eucalyptus, ylang ylang, geranium, lavender, lemon, tea tree, clary sage, rosemary and Roman chamomile. These 10 are only a fraction of the essential oils available on the market in a variety of brand names.
Peppermint is used for aches and digestive disorders. Eucalyptus works on the immune system and respiratory issues. Ylang ylang reduces muscle tension and helps relaxation. Geranium balances hormones in women and is good for skin. Lavender is a relaxant and helps with skin care. Lemon causes an uplifted mood and is good for cleaning and infections.
Roman chamomile is good for anxiety and insomnia as well as aches and tension. Rosemary is used to uplift and stimulate the mind and immune system. Tea tree is helpful for fungal infections and boosting the immune system. Clary sage is a natural painkiller and treats aches and pains. It can help with insomnia and hormonal balance.
Oils can be used in a variety of ways. They are often used in massage blends designed to treat certain client complaints. They can be included in baths to help with relaxation and skin problems. Oils can also be included in gels, creams, mouthwash, compresses and salves.
Other products include base, or carrier oils. These are vegetable oils used in massage and skin care to dilute essential oils and help with blends made from essential oils. Hydrosols, or floral waters, are byproducts of making essential oils and are also used in blends and recipes.
