Herbal Bath Tea Recipe

Herbal medicine has been used in many countries around the world for centuries. Herbal tea baths are a popular way to use herbs to relieve a variety of ailments in a relaxing atmosphere. They can be expensive when purchased from health stores and spas, so making tea baths at home is an inexpensive alternative.
  1. Ingredients

    • An herbal tea bath begins with base ingredients that will soften skin and can be adjusted to create a variety of recipes to give varying results. Create the base by mixing 1/2 cup powdered milk,1/4 cup sea salt, 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. To make a more specialized remedy, add 1/2 cup of dried herbs of your choice to the mix. The types of herbs that are added depend on the desired results.

    Herbal Properties

    • There are hundreds of herbs that have medicinal properties. The most commonly used herbs for tea baths are lavender, rosemary, chamomile, sage, mint, bay leaves and basil. Oatmeal is also a common addition as it is good for softening the skin and relieving itching. Lavender is used for relaxation because of its calming and sedative effects. It is also good for insomnia, anxiety and depression. Chamomile is also used for relaxation. Rosemary is used to improve memory. Sage is used as a stimulant and antiseptic. Mint is used to energize, while bay leaves are used to relieve muscle aches and improve circulation. Basil is by far one of the most popular herbs due to its use as an aphrodisiac. Herbs can also be combined to create a personalized bath.

    Running the Bath

    • Once you've got the mix of herbs you want and have added them to the base, place it in an organza drawstring bag. These can be purchased at the local craft store. Turn the water to the desired temperature and hang the bag over the faucet. Make sure that it is positioned so that the water runs over and through it. When the tub is full, remove the bag, and place on a towel to keep mess to a minimum. Soak in the water for at least 30 minutes, and as will all aromatherapy, it works best in a quiet environment. Empty and wash the organza bag to reuse later.
