How to Store Aromatherapy Oils
Instructions
-
-
1
Purchase oils stored in dark glass containers only. Essential oils used in aromatherapy can break down plastic containers and should only be kept in glass containers.
-
2
Place oils away from light. Light can also degrade essential oils and colored bottles prevent light and harmful UV rays from breaking down the oil.
-
3
Store oils in a cool, dry and dark area. Avoid excessive temperature fluctuation, heat and moisture as those elements can degrade their quality. Keep in the refrigerator if closet space is not an option.
-
4
Keep oils in airtight containers. Secure lids and screw them on as tightly as possible to prevent air contamination.
-
5
Familiarize yourself with oil "shelf life." The amount of time you can safely store essential oils--the shelf life--varies with each oil. Generally most oils can last months, even years, if stored properly. If the oil starts to give off a rancid odor or looks cloudy, it's time to throw it away.
