What is desonide cream used for?
Desonide cream is a topical corticosteroid medication used for the relief of itching and inflammation caused by a number of skin problems. It is not available in the US.
Desonide is used to treat a number of skin conditions including:
- Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
- Contact dermatitis
- Intertrigo
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis
- Pruritus ani and vulvae
- Nappy rash
- Psoriasis
It is often used as a second-line treatment after milder topical corticosteroids have been ineffective.
Desonide cream is applied to the affected area of skin 2 to 4 times a day, or according to the doctor's instructions. The cream should be rubbed in gently until it is completely absorbed. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by the doctor and not to use more or less cream than prescribed.
The treatment should be stopped as soon as the skin problem has improved. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids can cause side effects such as skin thinning, fragility, and the appearance of stretch marks.
Desonide cream is not suitable for use on the face, eyes, or genitals, or on open wounds or infections. It should not be used by people who are allergic to any of the ingredients of the cream.
If side effects occur, they usually improve after the cream is stopped. If you experience any side effects that are severe or bothersome, it is important to see a doctor.
