Hops & Fragrant Herbs for Sleeping
For centuries natural remedies have been used to promote sleep. Millions suffer from sleeplessness every night. Over-the-counter medication doesn't always work, and people often seek out alternative solutions to induce sleep. Hot baths, warm milk, soothing music are some recommendations. Aromatherapy may be a welcome aid to a sleepless night.-
Hops
-
Usually associated with beer, hops are grown on a vine which can climb up to 20 feet. The bitter taste is what drew brewers to begin using hops in the 12th century. Being part of the hemp group, it is regarded as a strong sedative. Used alone or with a mixture of other herbs, hops can be put in a small cloth bag (sleep pillow) and placed under a standard pillow. The scent of hops should promote a more restful night.
Lavender
-
When it comes to sleep herbs, Lavender is most commonly known for its relaxing properties. Fresh sprigs may be placed in between sheets. Dried flowers can be used in sleep pillows and potpourri. Essential oil may be heated to infuse an entire room. Lavender may also be found in baked goods such as quick breads, cakes and cookies.
Chamomile
-
Known as the national flower of Russia, the chamomile flower is touted for its soothing properties. The daisy-like plant is most often ingested in tea form but may also be used in a sleep sachet. The fragrant buds smell faintly of apple, and may be paired nicely with lavender or lemon balm.
Lemon Balm
-
Another member of the mint family, lemon balm, is known for its calming effects. The slight lemon scent is soothing in a tea. The dried herb may be placed in a bowl, placed beside the bed and crushed to release its scent. As with the other herbs, it may be placed in a sleep pillow, or the essential oil can be heated for larger room coverage.
Neroli
-
Sold mainly as an essential oil, Neroli oil comes from the blossom of the bitter orange tree. The oil may be added to a carrier oil such as sweet almond or olive and massaged into the skin. It may also be placed in bath water or heated in an oil diffuser.
Ylang-ylang
-
The light fragrance of custard, neroli and jasmine combine to give ylang-ylang its calming properties. It may be added to a vaporizer or diffuser for a full room effect. Place a few drops onto a pillow for a more subtle approach to sleeplessness.
