How to Make a Pine Cone Candle Mold

Making your own candles, soaps and other molded items sometimes requires that you make your own molds. For instance, making a pine cone mold for candles gives you the ability to reuse the same mold repeatedly for a wide array of projects. It also prepares you for molding other 3D objects for a multitude of tasks, whether you're making soap, jewelry or home decor products.

  • Nonstick cooking spray

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the inside surface of a 20 ounce coffee can with nonstick cooking spray. Sit the can aside.

    • 2

Add 3 cups of rubber-latex molding compound to the 2 quart glass bowl. This compound can be found in any craft supply store or online, and is used in a wide array of applications; especially mold-making.

    • 3

Stir in the 2 cups of hot water quickly, scraping the bottom and sides of the bowl to adequately dissolve all of the molding compound. The end result will be a thick, goopy rubber batter.

    • 4

Pour the rubbery batter into the coffee can. Give it two seconds to settle in the can, as it will be thick.

    • 5

Press a clean pine cone into the center of the goopy mixture, pressing down firmly until it is submerged entirely. Sit the can aside somewhere cool and dry for 24 to 48 hours to assure that the mold is completely settled and ready.

    • 6

Slide the rubber mold from the coffee can. It will retain the shape and texture of the can when it comes out.

    • 7

Use the knife to make an "X" pattern at the top of the mold where you inserted the pine cone. Dig the "X" shape deep enough so that the knife hits the top of the pine cone. Pry the "X" incision open carefully to remove the pine cone. The mold will close and still retain the shape of the can, and will not be an attractive object to say the least; however, pouring your choice of soap or candle mixture into the cut you just created, will fill the pine cone mold within the can-shaped rubber. This in turn creates a perfect soap or candle replica of the pine cone used to make the mold.
