Determing Ayurveda Doshas
-
1
Assess your body and mind for Vata (Air and Ether). Are you excitable, mentally quick, with dry skin? Are you slender? Do you prefer hot climates? Signs of balanced Vata are creative energy, healthy digestive and immune systems.
-
2
Determine if your Vata is out of balance. Symptoms of Vata imbalance are headaches, sore throats, dry coughs and most neurological health issues. Many Vata diseases occur in old age. Address Vata imbalance with an appropriate diet of warm and salty foods.
-
3
Evaluate for Pitta (Water, Fire) dosha. Pitta types are medium-build, confident and competitive. This dosha is not comfortable in hot weather, tends toward irritability and anger. Symptoms of Pitta imbalance are skin, vision and stomach problems.
-
4
Check for Pitta imbalance. If you find yourself prone to anger, harsh criticism of others, or recklessness, you may be experiencing Pitta irritation. Other symptoms may include hypoglycemia, rashes or bloodshot eyes. Avoid alcohol and cigarettes if Pitta is too pronounced. Eat cool or warm foods. Apples, avocados, oats and ice cream are a few suggestions to bring Pitta into harmony.
-
5
Assess for Kapha (Water, Earth). Kapha prakriti tends toward strong physiques, affectionate emotions and a general resistance to disease. This dosha prefers warm weather. Weight can be an issue for Kapha types.
-
6
Check for Kapha imbalances. Deep depression, congestion, over-sleeping and nausea are some of the symptoms associated with Kapha irritation. Diet suggestions include spicy, pungent foods that are warm, light and dry. Avoid cooking with water. Dairy and sweet foods aggravate Kapha. Raw fruits and vegetables are excellent to restore Kapha balance.
