Ayurvedic Allergy Treatment

Most allergy medications treat symptoms that environmental allergens cause you to experience. Ayurvedic, or naturally-occurring remedies, are designed to prevent reactions before they occur.

Whether you suffer from seasonal or ongoing allergies, a few of these ayurvedic remedies should get you into a more comfortable state when traipsing around in the great, allergy-filled outdoors.
  1. Picrorhiza kurroa

    • Picrorhiza kurroa, an herb traditionally used to treat constipation, low fever and asthma affecting the liver is usually thought of as more of a liver protector than an immunity regulator, but this naturally-occurring substance works to block excess levels of histamine and mast cells, which in turn helps to reduce symptoms of asthma and inflammation.

    Neti Pots

    • Neti pots are small vessels used to flush the sinuses and keep them clear. They have been used in India for thousands of years and require a little douse of saltwater that helps rinse away pollen grains and help treat allergies and other forms of sinus congestion.

    Quercetin

    • A natural plant-derived compound, quercetin helps stabilize mast cells and prevents them from releasing histamine. The recommended dosage for allergy-sufferers is about 1,000 milligrams a day, taken between meals.

    Stinging Nettle

    • Also called urtica dioica, stinging nettle behaves as a natural antihistamine, but without the unwanted side effects of dry mouth and drowsiness. Nettle inhibits the body's ability to produce histamine.

    Butterbur

    • Butterbur, or Petasites hybridus, is another alternative to antihistamines. A Swiss study published in British Journal of Medicine found that butterbur was as effective as the generic drug cetirizine, which is the active ingredient in Zyrtec.
