Studies conducted on rats have shown that consumption of ashwagandha root powder does not appear to pose the threat of serious side effects in most individuals. In fact, many of the side effects of taking this herbal supplement were positive. After 90 days of taking ashwagandha root powder, rats studied had gained weight, increased their liver weight, and showed signs of increased food consumption.

Ashwagandha root powder has been found to increase and help regulate thyroid activity. For most people this should not be a problem. Individuals with thyroid or liver problems, though, should not use ashwagandha. In one case ashwagandha root powder was found to have caused thyrotoxicosis, or hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid becomes overactive. Symptoms of thyrotoxicosis cleared up once the herb was no longer being taken.
