Is My Biologic Working?
Signs Your Biologic Is Working
Some people start to feel better quickly after starting a biologic. Others may take a few weeks or even months to notice significant improvements. In general, if your biologic is working, you should start to feel:
- A reduction in joint pain and swelling
- Increased flexibility and range of motion
- Improved energy levels
- Less morning stiffness
- Reduced skin inflammation and rash (for people with psoriasis)
- Improved bowel regularity and reduced abdominal pain (for people with Crohn’s disease)
Talk to Your Doctor
To determine if your biologic is working, your doctor may:
- Ask about your symptoms
- Perform a physical examination
- Order blood tests and other laboratory tests
- Evaluate how well your biologic is controlling the signs and symptoms of your condition.
If your condition does not improve with a biologic, your doctor may recommend:
- Trying a higher dose of your biologic
- Adding another biologic or medication
- Trying a different biologic
- Stopping the biologic altogether
Don't Give Up
Finding the right biologic can be a process of trial and error. If your first biologic doesn't work, don't give up. There are many other biologics available. Talk to your doctor about your options.
