Possible symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious and life-threatening complication of untreated or uncontrolled diabetes particularly in people with type 1 diabetes.
A combination of the following signs and symptoms may occur:
- Sweet or fruity smelling breath (aka "Acetone Breath") when high levels of ketones (acids produced by the breakdown of fat) build up in your body.
- Dry mouth: When your body is dehydrated, it can cause the mouth and other mucous membranes to become dry.
- Excessive thirst: Dehydration can cause the body to feel excessively thirsty.
- Rapid breathing (Kussmaul breathing): The body tries to eliminate excess ketones through breathing, leading to rapid and deep breaths.
- Confusion and drowsiness: High blood sugar levels can lead to confusion, disorientation, and drowsiness.
- Abdominal pain and nausea: DKA can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
If you experience these signs and symptoms, seek immediate medical attention, as DKA requires prompt evaluation and treatment.
