What is the aim of respiration?

Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions involving the breakdown of organic molecules to produce energy (in the form of ATP), that cells can harness. The overall goal of respiration is to obtain chemical energy from fuel molecules. These may be either organic compounds (sugars, amino acids, fatty acids) or inorganic ones (e.g., hydrogen for prokaryotes) via catabolism (breaking down), which uses oxygen as the final electron acceptor, releasing carbon dioxide and water in the process.
