What is coprofloxacin used for?
Coprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in adults, particularly those caused by susceptible bacteria. These infections may include:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and uncomplicated infections of the bladder and urethra
- Respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia
- Skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis (infection of the skin), abscesses, and surgical site infections
- Gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea
Coprofloxacin works by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections. It belongs to a class of medications known as fluoroquinolones.
Like all antibiotics, ciprofloxacin is only effective against bacterial infections. It is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
