How do you correctly check if a person is breathing?

How to Check for Breathing

1. Look for chest movement. Stand or kneel to the side of the person. Look at their chest to see if it is moving up and down.

2. Listen for breathing. Put your ear close to the person's mouth and nose. Listen for the sound of air moving in and out.

3. Feel for breath. Place the back of your hand near the person's mouth and nose. Feel for the movement of air.

If the person is not breathing or is having difficulty breathing, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

Additional Tips

* If the person is lying on their back, gently turn them onto their side. This will help open their airway and make it easier for them to breathe.

* If the person has something in their mouth or airway, try to remove it. Be careful not to push the object further down into the airway.

* If the person is not breathing, start CPR. CPR can help keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain and other vital organs until emergency help arrives.
