Chinese Method for Gender Selection

Women and couples planning on having a baby often wish for a boy or a girl and may try to increase their odds of conceiving the desired sex by using gender selection techniques, including an ancient Chinese method utilizing the lunar calendar.
  1. History

    • Legend states that the Chinese gender calendar is based on information gathered on births by women within China's Forbidden City during the Ching Dynasty, according to Pregnancy Today. The chart predicts a child's sex based on the mother's age and the month of conception. Hundreds of years ago a scientist discovered the chart in a tomb and it is now housed at the Institute of Science of Peking.

    Considerations

    • The chart is based on the Chinese lunar calendar and only provides information on the sex of children conceived when the mother is between the ages of 18 and 45. The chart may be used to plan when to try and conceive future children or to predict the sex of a child who has already been conceived.

    Warning

    • Although some reports claim the chart is up to 99 percent effective, there have been no scientific studies conducted to support that claim. Use of the Chinese method of gender selection should be for entertainment purposes only and not as an actual method of sex selection.
