Since ephedra facilitates the release of stimulating norepinephrine into the body, cardiovascular side effects are common. These may include a fast or irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure. Damage to the heart can be caused by ephedra.

Ephedra can cause gastric side effects that include nausea and a decreased appetite. Diarrhea is not uncommon.
Neurological Side Effects

Ephedra affects the central nervous system and can cause neurological side effects such as headache, dizziness, tremors, dry mouth, sweating and anxiety.
Life-Threatening Side Effects

Serious adverse events due to ephedra have been reported to the FDA. These include strokes, heart attacks and death. These events are linked only to ephedra and do not include any other causal factors.
Ephedra Interactions

Ephedra can have an additive effect when combined with many medications and supplements. Caffeine and aspirin are two common substances that should not be combined with ephedra.
