Just like finding a dentist or pediatrician, you need to find a chiropractor that meets your needs -- whether it's a flexible schedule, supportive front office staff or comfortable bedside manner. You also want a chiropractor with solid credentials and certified by the state board in which she practices.

  Check with your state medical board. Your state medical board should have a doctor directory that you can search by zip code and specialty. Choose several chiropractors. If you don't have Internet access, you can call the state licensing board to get information. In addition to certifying doctors, the role of the state board is to provide information to the public, so they should have a way for you to gain access to that information.

  Check your health care plan. Until relatively recently, chiropractic was considered to be alternative medicine. So check with your insurance company to find out if and how they cover chiropractic treatment.

  Get referrals from friends. Find out if your friends or relatives use any of the chiropractors on your short list. Ask them why they like or dislike a particular doctor.

  Ask your doctor. You doctor wouldn't want to risk his patients, reputation and livelihood by recommending a doctor that is not board certified.
