Can Chiropractic Care Help Childhood Tics?
Childhood tics are a common symptom of Tourette's syndrome, attention deficit disorder and other neurobehavioral conditions. Tics can also occur in isolation without indicating the presence of any specific disease or condition. Many parents choose to use chiropractic care as a treatment for children with tics.-
Theories
-
Advocates of chiropractic medicine believe that mild misalignment of the spine can interrupt the flow of nerve impulses to the brain. In theory, misalignment of the cervical vertebrae can cause tics and related conditions.
Evidence
-
A 2003 case report discussed the chiropractic care of a nine-year-old boy who experienced tics secondary to Tourette's syndrome, ADHD and depression. His symptoms improved tremendously after receiving chiropractic care.
Considerations
-
Childhood tics have a wide variety of causes. Because of this, some children may experience improvement after receiving spinal manipulation, but others may show no improvement.
Warning
-
When it is performed by licensed professionals, chiropractic care is widely acknowledged as safe and effective. However, improper manipulation of the spine can cause serious nerve damage, which may result in paralysis or even death.
Time Frame
-
Some children experience relief from tics after just one chiropractic session. Others may require up to ten treatment sessions before benefits become apparent.
