Types of Stones for Pedicures

Stones have been used to give pedicures for many centuries around the world. Most popular in Asia and Australia, pedicure stones are either heated in a professional stone heater, left at room temperature or chilled to induce a soothing effect. The temperature depends upon the stone. Basalt, Jade, Pumice and Mookaite rocks are good for heating, as they hold the heat better than most others. Marble is preferred for cold use because it holds the cold longer.
  1. Foot Stones

    • Foot stones are large flat stones which, after warmed, are placed under the soles of the feet or on top of the soles of the feet while lying on the stomach. While the feet rest on the stones, the muscles in the feet relax. This is especially beneficial for people suffering from pain due to inflammation and tightening of foot tissue, also known as Planter Fasciitis. Foot stones are often used while the feet are treated to a bath with coconut milk, but can be used alone.

    Toe Stones

    • Toe stones are heated, then set between the toes to help the muscles relax after a long day of walking or standing on your feet. This can be especially soothing to women who wear high heals. Toe stones can be made of either jade or mookaite, which is a form of jasper found in Western Australia, believed to be a healing stone.

    Bowl Warming Stones

    • Bowl warming stones are placed in the water of a pedicure bowl to keep the water warm while the feet soak. These stones are much larger than toe stones and can be made of Australian Granite or Basalt. They are specially designed to sustain the water temperature.

    Foot Wands

    • The foot wand, unlike other pedicure stones, is used at room temperature, heated or even chilled. The wand is rubbed up and down the bottom of the foot, and pressed into pressure points to stimulate the nerves in the foot. This stimulation helps improve circulation in the body much like the Thai use wooden sticks in reflexology.

    Pumice Stone

    • Pumice stones are one of the best-known devices used to remove dead skin from the feet. These natural exfoliants are formed when hot lava suddenly cools, such as when lava comes into contact with water. Pumice stones can be heated or also soaked in water before use.
