Guide for How to Do a Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage is a popular form of massage therapy that has been in use for thousands of years. A hot stone massage commonly takes about an hour and a half. Volcanic stones, also called basalt stones, gemstones and tenshi stones are all useful for hot stone massage. A heating unit for the stones is necessary, but never heat stones in a microwave. Have an adequate number of stones on hand to avoid continually reheating them. Massage oils are used for the lubricating source, and aromatherapy is employed for the overall relaxation experience.-
Preparation
-
Before beginning, make sure the stones are sterilized. Drape a sterile linen over the massage table. Stones should be laid out on the massage table in two rows. Have the recipient of your massage lie supine on the stones. The hot stones should be on each side of his spine and not touching it. Apply massage oil first upon his face. Make sure to use a light coating of oil. Using four small hot stones, place one underneath his lips, one on each cheek and one on the center of his forehead.
Front
-
While the stones remain on the face, begin massaging various parts of her body by gliding stones over them using the amount of pressure that is appropriate for her needs and preferences. The size of these stones should vary depending on the size of the person receiving the massage. For example, when massaging larger legs, use larger stones.
The legs and feet should then be massaged and a small stone placed between each of her toes when the leg and foot massages are completed. Next, use the stones to massage her arms and hands. Place a stone into her palms after the arms and hands are done. When completing the front portion of the massage, gently remove the stones from her face, toes and palms.
Back
-
Have the recipient lie on his stomach, and apply oil over the back of the body. Massage his back, and the backs of his arms and legs. When completed, place stones on the shoulders, scapulas and sacrum. Again place a stone in his palms. Place stones just beneath the buttocks, on the back of the knees and calves. The stones will not always rest well on the calves, but try just in case.
Finally, massage the scalp, neck and shoulder areas. Remove all of the stones from the body and allow the individual to rest for a few moments. The hot stone massage is now complete.
