The popliteal fossa, also known as the popliteal hollow or popliteal region, is a diamond-shaped, fascial lined, synovial-filled depression located posteriorly on the knee joint. This fossa is superficial and connects the thigh posteriorly with the leg.
The popliteal fossa contains neurovascular structures: arteries, nerves, veins and lymph nodes. The popliteal fossa contains the:
- popliteal artery
- tibial nerve
- common fibular (peroneal) nerve
- vein
- popliteal lymph node
