What is pseudoxanthoma elasticum?

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue of the skin, eyes, and arteries. The main symptom of PXE is the appearance of yellowish papules and plaques on the skin, particularly on the neck, armpits, and groin. These lesions are caused by the accumulation of elastic fibers in the skin. In addition to skin problems, PXE can also cause eye problems, such as retinal degeneration and glaucoma, and cardiovascular problems, such as arterial calcification and hypertension.
