What does an underexposed x-ray look like?

Underexposed X-rays appear very bright or white without much detail visible within the exposed area. X-rays that penetrate the body are darkened so any structures that block this x-ray appear lighter. However, when there is not enough exposure from the radiation, all or nearly all of the X-ray appears light with limited differentiation between tissues and their densities on the film or digital sensor.
