Ways to Reduce Loud Noises With Ear Plugs
Human hearing is the product of signals from the ear canal. It is coated in tiny hairs that move with sound waves. This movement of the tiny hairs is translated into signals through the ear drum, which are then transmitted to the brain. When an especially loud noise hits these hairs some of them can break. Once the hair breaks, it does not heal, and your natural ability to hear is permanently impaired. Use of earplugs can help reduce that risk.-
Moldable Ear Plugs
-
You can reduce the intensity of noises by using moldable ear plugs. These are plugs made of foam, wax or silicone. For foam ear plugs, squeeze the individual plug to compress it. Then, gently insert it into your ear canal. The foam will expand, filling the ear canal. For wax or silicone plugs, roll them up gently into a ball. Then, lift up your ear to give a better passage into your ear canal. Slide in the rolled up plug. Hold the plug in with your finger, waiting until the count of 20 to let go. You will know you have a good seal when your voice sounds muffled. This physical barrier will reduce loud noises and protect your hearing.
Customized Ear Plugs
-
These are plugs made specifically for your ear. The plug maker will take an impression of your ear canal, then make a plug designed to fit in perfectly to create a physical barrier to protect your hearing.
Filtered Musicians Ear Plugs
-
These are similar to custom ear plugs, but they are designed to reduce the intensity of noise without distorting the sound itself, which normal ear plugs can do. These are much more expensive than the aforementioned types, but are useful for musicians, because they provide fidelity across certain frequencies while muffling the intensity of the sound.
