What to Nasal Polyp
1. Saline rinses: Nasal irrigation, or rinsing your nasal passages with a saline solution, can help to loosen and remove nasal polyps. Use a neti pot or a bulb syringe to flush your nasal passages with warm, salt water several times a day.
2. Nasal sprays: Over-the-counter nasal sprays containing corticosteroids, such as fluticasone (Flonase) or triamcinolone (Nasacort), can help to reduce inflammation and shrink nasal polyps. Use these sprays according to the directions on the package.
3. Oral medications: Oral decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) or oxymetazoline (Afrin), can help to relieve congestion and reduce the size of nasal polyps. These medications should be used for a short time only, as they can cause rebound congestion if used for too long.
4. Antibiotics: If a bacterial infection is causing the nasal polyps, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection.
5. Surgery: If other treatments do not work or if the nasal polyps are large and blocking your breathing, surgery may be necessary to remove them. Surgery can be done endoscopically, through the nostrils, or through an external incision.
