How to Use an AED

Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in an Emergency:

1. Check for Responsiveness:

- Gently shake and shout to the person. If they are unresponsive, call 911 or the emergency services immediately.

2. Begin CPR (if trained):

- Start CPR if you are trained. Compressions without breaths are acceptable if you are not trained in full CPR.

3. Retrieve the AED:

- Locate the nearest AED and bring it to the person's side.

4. Turn On the AED:

- Most AEDs turn on automatically when opened or the switch is flipped.

5. Attach the Electrode Pads:

- Open the pad package and remove the pads.

- Peel off the adhesive backing.

- Place one pad on the person's bare chest, to the right of the breastbone.

- Place the second pad on the person's left side, below the collarbone.

6. Follow AED Prompts:

- The AED will analyze the person's heart rhythm.

- Follow the clear voice prompts provided by the AED.

7. Stand Clear:

- Make sure everyone, including yourself, is standing clear of the person when the AED is analyzing the heart rhythm and delivering a shock (if necessary).

8. Deliver a Shock (if advised):

- If the AED advises a shock, ensure no one is touching the person, then press the "shock" button when prompted.

9. Continue CPR:

- After the shock (if delivered), the AED will prompt you to continue CPR.

10. Monitor and Follow Prompts:

- Continue to follow the AED's voice prompts until help arrives.

11. Hand Over Care:

- Once emergency medical professionals arrive, stay nearby and provide them with any information they need.

Remember that AEDs are designed to be user-friendly, and most voice prompts will guide you through the steps clearly and concisely. AEDs can be crucial in providing life-saving assistance until emergency personnel arrive.
