I have a bump on the outside of my ear that hurts when touch why might this be?

Possible conditions:

1. Ear piercing: If you recently got your ear pierced, it's normal for some swelling and discomfort around the piercing site. This usually goes away within a few days or weeks.

2. Ear infection (otitis externa): This is an infection of the outer ear, which can be caused by bacteria or fungi. Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and itching in the ear.

3. Earlobe cyst (sebaceous cyst): This is a benign, fluid-filled sac that can develop under the skin of the earlobe. It feels soft, smooth, and movable and usually painless unless it becomes infected or irritated.

4. Keloid: A keloid is a raised, firm scar tissue that can form after an ear piercing or injury to the earlobe. Keloids are usually skin-colored or reddish and can be tender or painful.

5. Abscess: An abscess is a collection of pus that forms due to bacterial infection. It can occur in any part of the ear, including the outer ear. Symptoms of an abscess include pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and tenderness.

6. Eczema: Eczema is a skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It can affect the earlobe and the outer ear.

When to see a doctor:

See your doctor or urgent care provider if:

- The bump is painful or tender to the touch

- You have any other symptoms of an ear infection, such as fever, drainage from the ear, or hearing loss

- The bump is growing or changing in appearance

- You have a history of keloid formation or eczema
