What is a palatal hook?
The palatal hook is typically made of stainless steel or nickel-titanium alloy. It is a small, L-shaped wire that is cemented onto the palatal (roof) surface of the molar. The hook projects downward and outward from the tooth, where it can easily be engaged by elastics.
Palatal hooks are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances, such as braces or aligners. They can be an effective way to correct mild to moderate overbites and crossbites.
Treatment time with palatal hooks can vary depending on the individual patient's case. In most cases, palatal hooks are used for several months to a year.
