Why doctors against albularyo?
The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has repeatedly expressed its opposition to albularyo, citing the following reasons:
1. Albularyos do not have the same level of training and education as medical professionals. They often rely on traditional beliefs and practices that have not been scientifically proven, which can lead to inaccurate diagnosis and ineffective treatment. This puts the health and safety of patients at risk.
2. Albularyos often use unlicensed and potentially dangerous substances in their treatments. These substances can include herbal remedies, animal parts, and even pesticides, which can cause serious side effects and even death.
3. Albularyos can create a false sense of security. Patients who seek treatment from albularyos may believe that they are receiving legitimate medical care, when in reality they are not. This can delay or prevent patients from seeking proper medical treatment, which can lead to more serious health problems.
4. Albularyos are often involved in fraud and malpractice. They may charge excessive fees for their services, and they may also make false or misleading claims about their effectiveness. This can exploit the trust and vulnerability of patients, and it can also undermine the reputation of legitimate healthcare professionals.
In light of these concerns, the PMA has called for the government to regulate albularyo practices. This could involve requiring albularyos to obtain a license, undergo training, and adhere to certain ethical standards. The PMA also believes that the public should be educated about the risks of albularyo practices and encouraged to seek proper medical treatment.
While albularyo practices may have cultural and historical significance, it is important to prioritize patient safety and evidence-based medicine. By regulating albularyo practices and promoting proper medical care, the PMA aims to protect the health and well-being of the public.
