How to Use Intention Visualization and Emotion to Create Change

Changing direction can be as easy as turning the corner at an intersection, going up or down stairs or even just facing the opposite direction with your body. But making a change in the events that impact your daily life is not as clear-cut as driving a car and turning the steering wheel.

According to Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, author of "The Power of Intention," you become what you choose to be. To bring about meaningful change, start by understanding the beliefs that are shaping your life.

Write down every belief you have, whether you consider it to be good or harmful, put it on the list. For instance, you might believe that you don't deserve to earn large sums of money. Or you might believe that you are a strong and capable provider.

Include beliefs about your life in general, your interactions with others and about yourself personally. You may find some of your beliefs form clusters and when you change the basic belief, the entire cluster collapses and no longer drives your reality.

Take the emotional charge away from the beliefs you want to change by using the meridian tapping technique called EFT or emotional freedom technique championed by Gary Craig.

State the belief you would like to change. For example, say that you want to be more assertive.

Make a note of how emotionally charged you feel when you think about being assertive. Note where your body has tension and rate the body's reaction on a scale of 1 to 10.

Using the index and middle finger, tap on the karate chop part of the palm of your other hand and say: "Even though I feel powerless in my dealings with people, I accept myself without judgment."

Continue tapping while you repeat the phrase three times.

Using the index finger and middle finger, tap the following meridian points:

Top of the head at the apex of the ears (often called the soft spot on a baby)

      The forehead between the eyebrows

The temple at the side of the eye

The cheek bone under the eye

The top lip under the nose

The chin under the bottom lip

      The collarbone near the V-notch

Under the arm approximately 4 inches under the armpit

Say "Powerless" at each of the tapping points

Assess whether the emotional charge has been reduced to zero. When that belief no longer has an emotional connection for you, tap in the new behavior you would like to experience.

Visualize yourself acting assertively and feel the sense of confidence the new behavior brings. When you are able to place yourself mentally into the different behavior tap the meridian points and say "I have adult resources now."
