How to Treat Blackheads With Alpha Hydroxy

Acne is the scourge of adolescents and adults who suffer unsightly blemishes on the face, chest and back. Blackheads are a manifestation of acne that can be treated with several products that target the causes and symptoms. One such product is alpha hydroxy acid, also known as glycolic acid.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your face with mild soap and water.

    • 2

Use over-the-counter alpha hydroxy acid cream once or twice daily, depending on the package directions. Over-the-counter products have no more than a 10 percent concentration of alpha hydroxy acid.

    • 3

Rub the cream or lotion gently into the affected area until it's fully absorbed. Use only as much as is necessary.

    • 4

Avoid washing your face or other affected area where you've applied the alpha hydroxy acid for at least five hours after application. The substance needs time to work and washing shortly afterward will reduce its effectiveness.

    • 5

Repeat until blackhead symptoms have improved. You can expect results within one to two weeks, although this time period varies widely between individuals and the alpha hydroxy acid product being used.

    • 6

Wear sunscreen while using the product, as alpha hydroxy acid can increase photosensitivity.

    • 7

Experiment with different alpha hydroxy acid products to find the one that works best for your skin. Alpha hydroxy acid is available as a cream, gel, spray, lotion and face wash.

    • 8

Use alpha hydroxy acids in combination with anti-irritant products such as allantoin to reduce irritation to the skin. Allantoin is present in a variety of lotions and creams and helps soothe and moisturize the skin

      .

Consult a doctor regarding stronger alpha hydroxy treatments if the over-the-counter products fail to reduce your blackheads. Higher concentrations of the acid -- over 30 percent -- are available for more serious cases of acne or other skin conditions, but such treatments are administered by medical professionals.
