Liver Functions
-
In order to maintain a proper homeostasis (internal stability) among body systems and overall general health, it is a good idea to understand how the liver functions. A healthy liver cleanses the blood from toxins, creates bile, is a metabolic processor and serves as a storehouse for nutrients, vitamins and minerals, among hundreds of other functions. Livers are known to have regenerated themselves if a part has been taken out. But often, organ regeneration is outpaced by continued or excessive tissue damage.
Cleansing for a Healthier Liver
-
Increasingly, patients with liver disease, especially fatty livers, seek nonsurgical methods to improve the health of their liver. Health professionals recommend that people actively change their diet, adopt healthier lifestyle choices and participate in a regimen of natural liver cleanses. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished. Cleansing is noninvasive but does require a commitment to a set routine.
Methods of Cleansing
-
A damaged liver can be repaired through cleansing; it is recommended that the colon be cleansed first. This can be accomplished by transitioning to a diet rich in raw fruit and vegetables and limiting processed foods. After the colon is cleansed, the liver will respond better with a clean intestinal system. A change in diet and habits is mandatory. Stop drinking alcohol. Eat foods that aid in cleansing. These can be oats; dark green, leafy vegetables; garlic and onions; flaxseed; cinnamon; turmeric; and beans. Processed or nonorganically grown foods should be avoided. A diet low in fat that incorporates citrus fruits, such as oranges, or papayas aids in maintaining a healthy liver. You can also partake of the liver flush, which is drinking a mixture of olive oil, water, Epsom salt and grapefruit.
When Not to Cleanse
-
Do not actively cleanse the liver during pregnancy, if constipation occurs or if you are very ill. Avoid liver cleanses for very young children.
