Clean Your Insides Naturally: Colon Cleansing

According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC), the colon is responsible for extracting salts and water from semi-digested foods. Digested foods enter the colon through the small intestine and after the food has been drained of its nutrients, the colon pushes it out through the anus as fecal matter. Fecal matter may accumulate within the colon, which results in constipation or an impacted colon. Cleansing through natural herbs will gently clear out the colon to prevent constipation and its symptoms.
  1. Psyllium Seeds

    • Psyllium seeds are a common ingredient added to laxative products to bulk up fecal matter. According to the University of Maryland's Medical Center, psyllium seeds are surrounded by a gel-like substance that works to absorb water within the system. This herb will not only cleanse the colon, but it has also been shown by researchers from the University of Maryland to lower cholesterol, relieve diarrhea and treat other intestinal disorders. When psyllium is introduced in the intestines, it begins to absorb excess water and add bulk to fecal matter. As this fecal matter becomes larger, it stimulates the intestinal walls to push the stool out of the body. Within the colon, this herb will support the movement of impacted fecal matter that causes constipation and irritation.

To consume this herb, mix 2 tsp. of psyllium seed with 8 oz. of warm water. Quickly stir these ingredients together and drink before the psyllium becomes too thick to comfortably swallow.

    Flaxseed

    • Flaxseed comes from the flax plant, which has been used traditionally for fishnets and clothing as well as for its laxative qualities, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Flaxseed is comprised of not only fiber, but also lignans, protein and essential fatty acids, all of which work with the body to support intestinal movement as well as relieving common menopausal symptoms.

When you consume flaxseed, it instantly begins to absorb moisture within the intestines. By absorbing moisture, the flaxseed adds bulk to feces, which will stimulate the intestines to pass the stool throughout the digestive tract.

To consume this herb, purchase dried flaxseed, which is available at any health food store. Grind 1 tbsp. of flaxseed and mix with 8 oz. of water. Quickly drink this mixture as the flaxseed with begin to thicken, which can make swallowing difficult. After you have consumed this solution, drink an additional 6 to 8 oz. of water. If you are taking medications, speak with your physician as this herb can hinder their absorption.
