  1. Spring Cleaning

Before beginning the cleanse, take the time to clean out the cupboards and refrigerator. Throw out any junk food, or foods that may tempt you to "cheat." Purchase the ingredients on the list included ahead of time. If organic is available, always choose organic fruits and vegetables over conventional.

For the next five days begin each morning with a fresh green apple and a glass of psyllium husk mixed with eight ounces of water. For lunch, have a tossed green salad with sliced cucumbers, carrots and/or celery. Top with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Do not use any other dressing.

For dinner have one cup of steamed brown rice or wild rice along with a medley of steamed broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Drink plenty of purified water with sliced lemon throughout the day. Lemon helps to cleanse the digestive tract and loosen mucous buildup. Have another glass of psyllium husks and eight ounces of water before bedtime.

Following the five-day cleanse, ease back into a "normal" diet. Do not eat meat or dairy the day following the cleanse, as they are more difficult to digest. For breakfast, try a bowl of oatmeal or cream of wheat. For lunch, have some whole-grain pasta with the garden salad. For dinner, add some root vegetables such as potatoes, yams or turnips, along with the brown rice and steamed vegetables. Continue to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

To keep the digestive tract clean and regular, continue to take the psyllium husks once or twice daily. Once a normal diet is resumed, make sure to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. Lemons are also an inexpensive addition to the diet, which help to stimulate digestion and aid in keeping the digestive tract clean. This cleanse is safe and gentle enough to use throughout the year. Dr. Elson Haas recommends seasonal cleansing; once in the fall, winter, spring and summer.
