Body Detox Side Effects
Detoxification methods such as fasting and cleansing are used to regain health and increase vitality. However, before beginning any detox program, you should be aware of the possible side effects associated with cleansing. Keep in mind that, while these side effects may be unpleasant, they are only temporary and are a sign that toxins are being released from the body.-
Bowel changes
-
The primary side effect of fasting and cleansing is changes in bowel habits. Some may experience increased bowel movements and even frequent loose stools. Others may find bowel movements cease entirely during a cleanse. If this is the case, colonics or herbal enemas may be necessary. Adding cleansing herbs such as cascara sagrada also helps to stimulate sluggish bowels.
Generally, however, most individuals experience more-frequent trips to the bathroom. As toxins are released into the bloodstream, the kidneys and bowels will begin to excrete more waste. While this may be a bit inconvenient, it is a necessary part of the cleansing process.
Headaches
-
Headaches are the next most common side effect of a detox. These can range from mild to severe and can last hours or even days, depending on the level of toxicity. The headaches may simply be the result of hunger, or they may indicate dehydration. It is important to drink plenty of fluids, especially purified water, throughout a cleanse. Drinking juices that are high in electrolytes, such orange juice, can help ease headaches that result from low electrolyte levels and mild dehydration.
Joint and muscle aches
-
Stiff joints and sore muscles are actually one sign that the body is in need of detoxification. During a cleanse, these symptoms may initially be exacerbated by fasting and the effects of toxins being released. It is important to drink plenty of water during this time. Digestive enzymes, especially bromelain, can help ease the inflammation that causes joint and muscle pain. Following most detox programs, pain in the joints will decrease, and the limbs will be more flexible and mobile.
Sleep disturbances
-
Many who fast or cleanse experience disturbances in sleep patterns. These can include mild insomnia, irritability and even nightmares. Again, these are all a result of toxins being released into the blood stream. Another related side effect is mild depression. Remember, these side effects are temporary and should resolve after ending the cleanse. Supplements such as 5-HTP (hydroxytryptophan) help regulate hormones associated with mood changes and sleep patterns.
The healing crisis
-
All of the above symptoms are signs of what is referred to as a "healing crisis." As the body releases toxins that have been stored in the liver, kidneys and digestive tract, there are bound to be negative side effects. However, unless they are severe or intolerable, it is important to stay with the cleansing regimen and allow the detoxification process to finish. Gentle exercise such as walking and yoga help to move the lymphatic fluid and prevent stagnation. It is also vital to get plenty of rest during a cleanse, to give the body time to heal.
