Ideas for Detoxing a Liver at Home

The liver is a large organ that has many functions in the body. As a filtration organ it filters out toxins, wastes and poisons that accumulate in the body. Cleansing the liver helps it to function in a more efficient manner. Without a top-performing liver, the body is susceptible to many diseases, such as hepatitis. There are a variety of ways to clean the liver at home. Fasts and herbs are just two methods. Keeping the liver, and ultimately the entire body, clean should occur on a daily basis to prevent the build-up of harmful substances.
  1. Herbal Supplements

    • Herbalists recommend a few herbs to clean the liver. Milk thistle is well-known to clean the liver. This is a powerful substance which should probably be taken for one month twice a year. Other herbs that are considered effective in cleaning the liver are burdock root and dandelion.

    Fasting

    • The entire body responds well to a fast. Fasting is a way to give the digestive system a break. All the organs of this system, including the liver, take a rest and are better able to repair themselves. During a fast, no food is eaten but one should drink fluids. Short fasts of one to three days are probably safe for most people, but if you have any health problems it is best to get advice from a doctor.

    Drinking Fluids

    • The body needs plenty of fluids each day to perform at top capacity. By drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day the body is able to flush out wastes, toxins and poisons from all the organs of the body, including the liver. In addition to water, drinking juices and herbal teas also help to detoxify the liver.

    Cleaning the Colon

    • Large amount of wastes are in the large intestines. If these toxins and debris is not removed by regular bowel movements, these wastes are reabsorbed into the body and the liver has to once again filter our these toxins. Removing wastes from the colon is accomplished by drinking more water each day and eating more high fiber foods like vegetable and whole grains. Cleaning out the colon also helps to clean the liver because all parts of the body are interconnected. Fiber supplements are also helpful as are herbal colon cleaners. These cleansers stimulate the muscles of the intestines, which push the wastes through the intestines and out the rectum.

    Cleaning the Kidneys and Blood

    • Cleaning the kidneys and blood is another method of cleansing the liver. The blood brings needed nutrients and oxygen to all the organs including the liver. The main function of the kidneys is to filter the blood. Drinking lots of water cleans the blood and kidneys by flushing away toxins. Another way to clean the kidneys is with the herb Uva Ursi. If all the organs are working better, it results in less work for the liver. Because the liver is not overtaxed it can perform its functions better.
