How to Determine a Number of Lymphatic Massage Sessions

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), also known as lymphatic massage, was invented by Emil and Estrid Vodder in the early 1930s when they noted that their English patients who went to the Riviera in the winter came back to England with swollen lymph nodes in their necks. Today, MLD treats over 60 ailments and conditions. The number of sessions for lymphatic massage varies by patient and is determined by a number of factors.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a health history. The number of sessions that a client should receive will depend on their overall health. For example, a person diagnosed with cancer and has undergone chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy will probably need about 10 sessions to help the body remove toxins from the body.

    • 2

Focus on the trunk of the body. During the first session, concentrate your efforts on the trunk of the body where most of the lymphatic tissue resides.

    • 3

Follow up with the client after the first massage. For best results, call the person the following day. Find out how the client is feeling after one treatment.

    • 4

Reassess the client and determine an approximate number of sessions that will be required on the second visit.

    • 5

Talk to the client about diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors. Adopting healthy habits will improve the lymphatic system and will have an impact on the number of sessions needed.
